The Olympic journey: Mathilde U Kramer

At FREEQUENT, we are inspired by the strong and successful women that surround our brand. One of them being Danish athlete, Mathilde U Kramer, who helped break an Olympic record in 2021. She embodies #girlpower to the fullest and inspires us every day.

Therefore, we asked Mathilde to share the story of how she went from being a high-school student to an Olympic athlete.

The fastest woman in Denmark

Mathilde is born and raised in Løjt Kirkeby near Aabenraa. Today, she lives a busy life in Copenhagen, balancing her strict training schedule and her studies at the university.

She excel in 60m, 100m, 200m and 4x100 relay and has made a name for herself within the professional arena. As an 18-year-old she started running and six months later she won her first medal at the Danish Championships. And from that time on, her career has accelerated. Today, she is the fastest woman in Denmark to run 60 meters and when she participated at the Olympics in 2021, she broke a Danish record together with the relay team.

Evident from her late introduction to athletics, an Olympic career was not always in the cards as she spent most of her childhood doing gymnastics and riding horses. It was only by coincidence that she came across the sport.

“We were running a relay at school, and I thought it was awesome. The amount of adrenaline was indescribable. At that time, I did notice that I was faster than everyone, but I could never have foreseen what was coming. And from that day on, I decided to pursue this newfound passion.”

The tracksuite is part of our High Summer collection and arrives online in week 32.

Sisterhood and team spirit

It can be quite the balancing act, having to compete against your teammates one minute and then run a team relay the next. However, there is a strong sense of togetherness on the Danish national team, where they are all united by the same goal – To make athletics more recognised in Denmark.

“In Denmark, there are so many fast women at the moment, which means that we can compete internationally. For that reason, we don’t compare on a national level anymore. Instead, we have a strong team spirit and cheer each other on. We are inspired by the success of a teammate, and we use that to improve our own performance so that we can gain greater awareness to the sport.”

OL 2024

The next goal is to qualify for the Olympics in 2024, where she has great aspirations for both her individual performance as well as the team’s.

“Competing at the Olympics in 2021 together with the team was the greatest experience ever. So of course, I want to do it again. This time, I hope to improve my own performance. I want to compete in the individual races as well as the team relay.”

We wish Mathilde all the best and can’t wait to see where her journey will take her!
